My Name Is Freya — And I'm Still Learning to Trust
Hi, my name is Freya and I am a Shepherd/Whippet mix. I love to run — and fast. I didn't know that about me until I had a forever family and the safety it provides. Now I can relax and find out who I really am.
In my beginning all I remember is RUN, RUN, RUN. That's what we were taught to do when we were pups. My mother was always on alert. One day while she was looking for food some humans caught us and took us to a place with a lot of other dogs. It was loud and scary and I was alone for the first time in my life.
Eventually I was taken to a house with other dogs. I didn't like it there. The other dogs were big and scary and always chasing me. I stayed in my kennel so no one could get to me. If they tried I would bite or scratch them.
Then one day a human came to my kennel and started talking to me. I didn't know what he was saying but I felt his energy and he seemed safe. I still wouldn't come to him but I let him touch me through the kennel. His touch felt safe too. Usually humans try to grab me but he wasn't doing that. He just sat at the door of my kennel and waited until I felt safe enough to sniff him a little.
Then Berney — that's his name — asked me to let him put on a leash. I did but it took a while. He took me outside to a car and we drove to my new home.
When we arrived there was another dog named Lilly and three black cats already there. This was going to be interesting since I was now the biggest animal in the house. I still didn't feel safe so I stayed in the corner where nobody could get to me easily.
Slowly Berney and his wife Nicolette won me over. It took a little while before I finally allowed myself to be touched. But when I did — it was so nice. Now I can't get enough. I go from one person to the next just to get scratches and rubs.
It turns out Lilly likes to play and we became good friends fast. Dogs don't scare me like humans do. Neither do cats. I'm getting used to these humans though. I'm just a little jumpy still — it's like a habit. I do it before I even know I did it.
I also made friends with the neighbor's dog Flower. She's a Husky and bigger than me but not faster. I have to run a little slower so she can keep up when we play chase.
I am doing better every day. It really helps knowing this is my forever family — that I can finally let go and just be loved.
When I was in that place with all the other dogs I saw how lucky I was to get out of there. Someone — I don't know who — made a donation and saved my life.
I have to ask you on their behalf. Would you donate? Or at the very least subscribe. Watching one video a week for two to three minutes can make that kind of difference. If you subscribe I'll make sure you get a weekly notice when we post a new story.
Thank you — on their behalf.
